2021.12.02 22:55 ItsJustNigel Seven years later, I've finally done it. I can finally say I'm gud.
Bear with me, this is long. Or don't. But I need to get this out there. A tale of my journey through Souls.
I've played souls games since I accidentally bought Demon's Souls, thinking it was a medieval God of War. I was young, dumb, and inexperienced. That game kicked my ass. I only got through it by duping boss souls until I was completely overpowered. Later, I tried again with Dark Souls and fell in love. So began a decade of Souls addiction. I beat all of Dark Souls, did NG+ a couple times for the endings and secrets, and finally completed an SL1 run in time for DS2 to come out. I did all of this solo. No friends played, and I preferred the challenge of solo runs.
I bought DS2 on release and, again, fell in love. The majesty of Majula, the haunting corners of Brightstone Cove, the slow revelation that the cycle has repeated and will repeat for countless kingdoms. I did numerous PVP builds, multiple NG+s, and soaked everything in. Again, all solo. I then played through the Crown DLCs to completion. Except for Lud and Zallen. I could not defeat those fucking cats, and the infinitely respawning reindeer combined with total sensory overload of the blizzard was too much for me. So I summoned a player. He led me through the blizzard, helped me chop up reindeer, and we separated and destroyed the cats. I felt empty, but at least it was over.
The souls series continued. Bloodborne ended up being my favorite game of all time. Dark Souls 3 felt like an amazing end that the prior games had built towards. Sekiro was a fun mixup with amazingly tight combat. I played all of these games multiple times, soloing every single boss and every single area, no matter how many tries it took me.
So at the end, I still felt incomplete. Not truly gud yet. Because there was one thing left undone.
I bought SOTFS and played on my PS5 over the past week. Base DS2 was a breeze - I remembered the general progression, and I surprisingly still had the muscle memory for all of the bosses (except executioner chariot, fuck executioner chariot.) Then came the DLCs. And I remembered how difficult they had been. How long I had struggled on Elana and Sinh. But they both went down first try. It was here that I began to hope. I then completed Brume Tower in one afternoon and defeated Fume Knight (not easily.) I moved to Sir Alonne. He felt unbeatable at first, but I eventually overcame him as well. Then, the moment I had been building for. What this whole run was about. Frozen Eleum Loyce. I made it through the whole area in a couple runs. Defeated Aava in a few tries. Even the Sunken King, lost to the flame of chaos, was laid to rest on my second try.
Then it came to the pinnacle. The Frozen Outskirts. I was reminded of the exhaustion. The terror. The utter blindness. But I eventually fought my way to the cats. And was promptly killed when the second jump in. I would try again. Rammed by a reindeer. Again. Killed by an avelyn. Again. Turbo fucked by reindeer. I began to lose hope. To go hollow myself. But I persevered. I eventually got the hang of the run. And I could get to the cats consistently. 3 times - three separate times - I got there, cooked Lud, and got Zallen to a hit or two away before he killed me. Once my sword broke. TWICE, his animations went nuts and he spun to claw me. But this was proof. I had gotten him so slow so many times. I knew I could do it.
And I did. I defeated Lud and Zallen, claimed my Loyce Greatsword, and celebrated. As of yesterday, I have explored every area, found every item, and soloed every boss in Soulsbornekiro. I am extremely proud. And I am ready for Edlen Ring.

For years I had always heard how terrible this film was. Frankly I always thought the subject mattered just turned people off. It is a murderer mystery/ police procedural set in the Gay S & M community of NYC. I've been going though a Friedkin phase so I figured I'd give it a shot. And yes it is pretty explicit with the Gay stuff (I'm straight) but the real problem is the plot. The story is super vague and ambiguous about a lot of details. And it doesn't really have a climax, it just sort of ends. Kind of like the French Connection. It is a great looking film, very sleek. And it's always cool to see NYC in the 70s and 80s when it was a total shithole. Also you get to see Al Pacino in Leather so that's fun. Still pretty disappointing. Definitely needs a remake. Have you seen it and what do you think?

2021.12.02 22:55 EntertainmentDue7752 Moving to Alaska from the tropics
So I just got a job offer in Fairbanks, and I am soooo excited about it. The job is perfect for me and I really want to take it. Even if I don't live in Alaska forever, I don't want to turn down this opportunity.
My issue is that my fiance was born and raised just a few notches north of the Equator and has never experienced a real winter (we met in his hometown and have been together for 3 years). I have never been to Alaska but I have spent most of my life living in cold places in the lower 48 (think 5-6 months of snow, sunset at 3:30 in the winter, etc...not like Alaska, I know, but about as harsh as it gets for most Americans). So I think I am fairly well-equipped to handle the shift. I like winter and I'm already used to using sun lamps to keep my vitamin D up in the winter.
My fiance is happy for me and says he will gladly move wherever I want, but I don't want to end up torturing him if he will truly be miserable in Alaska. For what it's worth I actually don't think he WILL be miserable, because he is an extremely adaptable person and has dealt with a lot in his life. He gets along with pretty much everyone and loves trying new things. He also loves hunting and fishing and being outdoors (though he is scared of the entire concept of bears). So I think we will be okay, though I am willing to find new work if it doesn't work out for us. I have a pretty in-demand credential and if he's miserable after an Alaskan winter I would not try to continue to force him through an experience that he hated; I love him more than I love any job. This is just a very good job, from my perspective.
Has anyone gone through this who would be willing to share their experiences? Am I being totally dumb for thinking this could be okay? If you moved from a very hot place to Alaska, how did it go for you?

2021.12.02 22:55 king_kingcharles Advice for letter writers for grad applications?
This is a long post; apologies in advance. I'm hoping someone has input on who I should ask next year for recommendation letters when I apply to grad school. For reference, I'm going for a STEM PhD; currently in a master's program because my undergrad GPA was below 3.0. I did my undergrad at an R1 university. People I'm definitely asking for a letter, when I apply, include a well-known professor in my field, with whom I took a challenging course for my major and got an A in, and sufficiently impressed him during office hours; and my master's-level research PI, assuming I do good research over the next two years. The question I have is who to ask for my third letter.
Option 1: a professor of an intro course I TA'ed for three semesters as an undergrad. I think I did a pretty good job as a TA, I did a lot of extra work and explained concepts really well (which she witnessed). I took her class as a freshman when I was really struggling with my own academics, so she would be able to advocate for my growth and confidence in the subject despite my early grades. My hesitations are that 1) she's a Senior Lecturer, not a Research Professor, 2) I'm not sure how taboo it is to have a grad LoR from a job position (rather than classroom or research), and 3) I'm reluctant to have 2 out of 3 letters come from my undergrad institution, and neither of them be from my undergrad PI. But this might be the only LoR that explains my poor GPA.
Option 2: my PI from undergrad. I'm not sure I impressed him, because I never got to wrap up the project I was working on and I took way longer than he expected to do most things. I literally have no clue how strong his letter would be, since it might be lukewarm but he also really believed in me and encouraged me a lot. He also knew about my GPA, and my mental health situations a bit. However, I asked him for a letter for masters' admissions, and barely got into programs: I got waitlisted for my undergrad institution that I thought I was overqualified for, and I'm worried his letter was the reason why.
Option 3: a professor that I've taken a course with during my master's, and gotten an A in. I've asked a lot of good questions and developed a rapport with him. My hesitation is that this course was almost comically easy, and a letter written by him might not be taken seriously. I'm not sure if I should ask ANY graduate course professor for a letter, if I already have one classroom letter from my undergrad.
Option 4: a second professor from my master's thesis committee, since the first LoR from my committee would be whoever I'm doing research with. I'm not sure how well the committee would get to know me as a researcher, since I can only be doing research with one of the members. It would, however, be a LoR about my research abilities.
Any thoughts would be appreciated! I'm really hoping to go R1 again for my PhD, since I'd like to pursue a career in academia. So any minute details, however insignificant, might be really helpful for me.

2021.12.02 22:55 billybaroo15 Help with purchasing a laptop for playing online poker.
Title pretty much sums it up. I’m looking to buy a laptop primarily to play online poker. I’m a newb when it comes to computers but I did read that I need 8gb or ram and 256gb of storage. I would prefer to buy a refurbished laptop if possible to save some money, but there are so many options I really don’t know what’s good or not. Any suggestions?

2021.12.02 22:55 Aninvisiblemaniac Are the characters less expressive this season?
I don't know if this is just something I've been imagining with the new episodes but it feels like the animation has gotten lazier or something.
It's most noticeable in the 8th episode of this season Stuck In The Kitchen With You everyone just has a blank expression the entire episode. The mouths move to the dialogue fine but their eyebrows and expressions barely change the entire time.
The small amount of animation during the credits song does have their faces actually expressing emotion, but the actual episode was so monotone
I find it a little off-putting and I've never felt this way about the show before. I was wondering if anyone else has found this season a little off?
