2022.01.27 13:42 gopackgo1002 Do I trade in my $75k (and climbing) secure, easy IT job to go back to school from square one and pursue a music teaching career?
TL;DR: I'm 35, partnered with no kids (and none in the future). Do I trade in my $75k (and climbing) secure, easy IT job to go back to school from square one and pursue a music teaching career?
I'm 35, partnered with no kids, live in a very high COL city in Canada. I work for the municipal government in IT making about $75k a year for 35h/wk of work plus very good benefits, pension, and plenty of vacation time. I have no formal education in this field. I am currently up for another promotion after having received one 2 years ago. I like the environment, the work I do, and my coworkers. Absolutely nothing is wrong with my current career track, and I could be making well over 100k doing work I am "fine with" in the next 5-10 years.
My partner is in the medical field and makes over $100k/year with similar security and benefits. We are extremely fortunate. I feel almost guilty to be still "missing something" given how good I have it professionally and personally, but here I am.
Without going into all the details, I had a very rough childhood with little parental support. The music programs at my schools were my "happy place," and I spent almost all my time in the choir room or performing/producing musical theatre etc. I had the privilege of going to a high school that produced (from my class alone) a Tony award-winning Broadway performer and 3 other successful professional musicians, not to mention many music teachers. We were privileged to be brought up in an environment of such excellent training and community and to have teachers that truly cared about us. I always saw them as my role models and still keep in touch with many of them.
Unfortunately due to many factors, I was unable to join my peers in their university music programs (or to receive post-secondary education at all). Still, I have done everything I can to continue enjoying and developing my musical skills on my own time. I underwent a gender transition (and thus a vocal change from alto to baritone) in my mid 20s and completely retrained my voice to the point that I was able to get into a highly competitive, internationally recognized men's chorus here. It has always felt right to me (like I'm "fulfilling my purpose") to be in community with fellow singers/choristers, and I have pursued many other musical avenues from playing lead roles in musical theatre to fronting bands to facilitating my church's worship service. I don't say this to brag at all, but to clarify how much I am drawn to music, and to highlight how even with all this music in my life, I still feel that something is missing.
I recognize that as someone who is transgender and has successfully continued on with vocal music, I have somewhat of a rare and potentially valuable experience to share with others. I'm not clear on exactly how I would do this, but I do see myself teaching music at some level (high school or university). I have no interest in being a solo performer or anything like that. I have gone over this with many counsellors, friends/family etc, and verified that I am not seeing this situation through "rose-coloured glasses" or romanticizing the past. I know this would be a major lifestyle change, years of juggling bills/commitments/school, and a tough go financially, which is why I'm here.
Although starting teacher salaries in BC are not as high as what I make now, they are relatively decent at $62k/yr minimum (without masters degree or any other advanced education). For those with more certifications and masters degrees (which is quite common) plus 10 years experience, the salary tops out at $97k/yr in my area. University positions are obviously far more varied and rare, so I don't necessarily plan on doing that, but if the opportunity presented itself, I would be interested.
The biggest hurdle is the schooling. I would be starting from square one - needing to earn (and pay for) all the credits towards my bachelor's degree, then attending a year of teacher's college. This would take me far longer than 5 years because I would need to work in the mean time. It's likely that I could do the first couple years of credits distance/evening/around my work schedule, but eventually I will need to attend daytime classes in order to fulfill the musical requirements of the degree, which likely means quitting my job and working nights somewhere for far less pay. University schooling here is a lot less costly than the US, but will still cost about $35,000 (for the whole 5 years assuming no bursaries/scholarships).
Am I crazy to do think about this? Has anyone else attempted something similar and has some advice? Are there ways I can fund this (bursaries, etc) that might take some financial pressure off?

2022.01.27 13:42 Kitchen-Chair6372 Need a critique
I recently made contact with several residents who recently released from incarceration. I thought it would be interesting and impactful to do a series on three or four of them, asking about their time locked up during covid. Reports say conditions have poor during the pandemic. Additionally, data from the justice department shows fewer prisoners received early release or qualified for parole during covid. Is this enough of a theme for a photo story?
There's other factors to consider, though they might derail my theme. Our new governor recently fired our state parole board and brought a new board that will review criminal cases and likely redress who is eligible for parole. This is newsworthy but could easily become convoluted and muddled in legal technicalities.
I'm open to any suggestions or criticisms. Several of the subjects were released in landmark cases due to their prior crimes.

2022.01.27 13:42 Awakes_javi need indie pop/rock recommendations
similar to (The only Heartbreaker - Mitski) (You've got the heat - Luster) (Sobercoaster - Beddy Rays) and (IDK - Breakupshoes).
I'm providing these examples as a foundation, but just gimme the juicy goods. I don't like jazzy sounding indie music, or anything that's like "too slow", I like that guitar somewhat upbeat vibe feel.

2022.01.27 13:42 mohedean_h_9090 Update for the week!
How is everyone doing? Hope all is well!
I am currently semi-stuck on Quest 5. My code works with no issues, I get trophies but my results do not line up with the “test” results. I am simply missing a negative lol.. it’s driving me up the wall but I know I can figure it out. It is preventing me from gaining the code for Quest 6, but I know I’ll figure out the issue, eventually.. (jk, hopefully soon)
Happy coding everyone!
